Stop and Consider: Glasses Choices You Might Regret

Updated: Dec 20, 2024

Eyeglasses are among the most popular accessories for men, whether they're stylish sunglasses or prescription lenses for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Some even wear non-prescription glasses for that extra flair. Personally, I’ve been nearsighted since my early years and have opted for glasses for over 20 years without eye surgery.

If you’re in the market for new glasses, here are some common mistakes to avoid to ensure your purchase is a satisfying one!

Don't Rush into Buying the First Pair You See

After an eye exam that reveals you need glasses, resist the urge to pick the first pair you find. It’s easy to feel pressured to leave the store with a new accessory, but take your time!

Try on several styles, snap some pictures, and give yourself a moment to think about your options. Remember, if these are prescription glasses, you’ll be wearing them most of the day, so why rush? You’ll make better choices when you don’t feel rushed.

Don’t Choose Glasses Just Because They Look Good on Someone Else

It’s easy to be swayed by celebrity endorsements and fashionable ads, but the appeal you see might not translate to you. Factors like face shape, skin tone, and hair color all play a role in how a pair of glasses looks. Find a style that complements your unique features, not just one that looks good on someone else.

Don’t Shy Away from Trying Different Options

While articles on “Choosing Glasses for Different Face Shapes” can be helpful, they shouldn’t limit you. Many people come in with a list of styles they think will or won’t work for them, but this can cause you to overlook some surprisingly flattering options.

For instance, if you have a round face, you might think round frames are off-limits. However, there are countless round designs with varied shapes, proportions, and colors that could suit you perfectly. Don't assume - experiment!

Pay Attention to Lens Thickness

With advancements in technology, thin and lightweight lenses are more accessible than ever. However, don't overlook the importance of lens thickness. Thick lenses, often referred to as "bottle bottoms," can detract from the overall aesthetic of your frames. Choosing thinner lenses can enhance both the style and comfort of your glasses.

Keep these tips in mind to ensure your next glasses purchase is not only stylish but also suited to you!
