Mistakes That Ruin Your Polo Casual Look

When René Lacoste introduced the polo shirt for tennis in 1926, it was a game-changer - offering a more refined and practical option than the baggy shirts and ties athletes typically wore. Originally created for sports, the polo shirt has since evolved into a timeless piece that embodies both elegance and dynamism. Although it’s generally casual, the polo carries with it a rich history and tradition that deserves to be respected. And when I say “respected,” I mean wearing it properly 😉.

Here are 5 common mistakes men often make when rocking a polo shirt, along with some tips to get it right!

Leaving the Collar UP

The collar of a polo shirt adds a touch of dressy sophistication, helping to elevate its style. So, please - don't let the collar just stand up on its own 😢.

While you might think you’re channeling Kanye West or David Beckham with the "popped collar" look, the truth is, both of these icons ditched it a while ago. Popping the collar doesn’t make your polo look better; it just makes it look sloppy.

Wearing the Wrong Fit

Fit is everything when it comes to a polo shirt. It should neither cling to your body like a second skin nor hang loosely like a sack. Aim for a balance! The sleeves should gently hug your biceps, and the length of the sleeves should hit at the mid-bicep, or you can tweak it by a cm or so.

Getting the fit right makes all the difference, whether you're slimmer or more muscular.

Unbuttoning All the Buttons

A polo shirt strikes that perfect balance between casual and composed. So, if you're feeling the urge to show off some chest, reach for a dress shirt and leave the top few buttons undone.

With a polo, though, don’t go crazy with the buttons. For a three-button polo, keep the top button open, and fasten one or two of the lower ones. It’s all about balance, not excess.

Going Overboard with Bold Prints and Patterns

Keep it subtle. If you're aiming for style that lasts, go for the basics. Plain colors are always a safe bet - don’t fall into the trap of flashy logos, oversized pockets, or overly bold prints.

Sure, they might seem trendy for the moment, but classic simplicity always wins out in the long run. Stick with tradition for a style that endures.

Wearing a T-shirt Under Your Polo

Layering starts with the polo as your base layer, not with a t-shirt stuffed under it 😂. The polo is meant to be worn on its own, so resist the urge to complicate things with an unnecessary t-shirt underneath.

In conclusion, wearing a polo shirt with the right balance of style and sophistication isn't as hard as it seems. Avoid these simple mistakes, and you'll look effortlessly put-together every time.
