5 Wardrobe Items You Should Ditch for Good

Writer's picture: Tom GoedhartTom Goedhart

Prepare for a little debate over the five items I’m about to discuss. But hey, since you’re here, I trust you’ll keep an open mind. Let’s dive in! 😄

Now, for all the fashion enthusiasts out there, you can definitely pull off white socks or oversized shirts - essentially, items that challenge conventional style rules. You make them look chic and glamorous! My focus, however, is on the basics - the quickest routes to elevate your style game. So, to all the street style connoisseurs reading this, no offense intended! 😄

The following five items were once the epitome of trendiness... back in the day. Take flared jeans, for instance. I was a huge fan during my school years, but despite fashion’s cyclical nature, I don’t foresee a revival of these styles anytime soon.

Humorous Slogan T-Shirts

Let’s be honest, folks; most of us have matured. A man’s sense of humor should shine through his demeanor, personality, and actions, not via a T-shirt adorned with jokes. Relying on printed quips to show off your comedic side can sometimes backfire and come off as cringeworthy.

Replace with: Classic plain t-shirts or those featuring subtle, elegant prints.

Flared Jeans

It’s often said that jeans are timeless, but flared jeans are a different story. Unless you’re riding a horse in Texas, please skip the cowboy look! Flared jeans can ruin your silhouette, making you appear disheveled as they drag on the ground and over your shoes.

Replace with: Slim-fit or straight-leg jeans, a reliable choice for almost any guy.

"Ugly" Shirts

We all have a few ill-fitting shirts lurking in our closets - too tight or way too baggy. These wardrobe oddities often arise from poor sizing decisions or a moment of misguided confidence. I don’t need to remind you how crucial a proper fit is!

These shirts are frequently flashy, featuring shiny materials that hurt the eyes. The sight of someone crammed into a tight, glossy floral shirt is enough to give anyone a headache!

Replace with: Timeless Oxford shirts that never let you down. They’re versatile, easy to style, and pair seamlessly with selvedge jeans and brogues for a polished look.

Beaded Necklaces

If you’re still rocking those beaded necklaces tightly around your neck, it’s time to rethink your accessory choices. Those scream 90s boyband nostalgia!

Replace with: Sleek and simple necklaces, bracelets, or rings. Invest in these understated accessories, as they can elevate your look dramatically when styled correctly. Silver, white gold, or leather pieces with a delicate design complement a wide range of outfits effortlessly.

Cargo Shorts

In terms of style, cargo shorts, like flared jeans, can throw off your leg proportions, especially if you have larger thighs. While they were once practical for carrying items, let’s face it: most of us only need our phone and wallet when heading out. For everything else, just grab a bag!

Replace with: Chino shorts. Recently, the trend has shifted toward shorter shorts, typically above the knee. Chino shorts are incredibly versatile, pairing well with T-shirts, Oxford shirts, loafers, and more.

For those with thicker thighs, opt for tapered shorts that reach the knee, ensuring the leg openings aren’t wider than your hips to maintain a balanced silhouette.
