Belts: The Unsung Heroes of Men’s Style

Belts are the ultimate accessory - something every guy knows but might not fully appreciate.

Beyond holding up your pants, belts define your style, create clean lines between your upper and lower body, and add that extra flair to your outfit. These days, though, belts are more about making a fashion statement than serving a practical purpose since well-fitted pants don’t need much help staying in place.

A belt’s job now is to reflect your personality and elevate your overall look. Let’s break it all down so you can get the most out of this underrated wardrobe essential.

Size Matters

A perfect fit is non-negotiable, not just for belts but for anything you wear. Belt length is measured from the buckle to the middle hole - usually the one you use most. This should align with your waist size for the best fit.

Pro tip: The belt’s tail should loop neatly through the first belt loop on the left. If it reaches the second loop or beyond, it’s too long. Fix this by visiting a leather repair shop (Hanoi locals, Ha Trung Street is a great spot!). Ask for a custom trim, and you’ll notice the difference immediately.

Some brands size belts as S, M, L, etc., based on your pants size. For example, if you wear size 30 pants, an S belt should fit; size 30-32 might need an M, and so on.

Formal Belts: The Essentials

Mixing formal and casual belts? Big mistake. A mismatched belt can ruin your entire outfit.

SUIT1

Formal belts are specifically for suits and dress pants and should always match your shoe color. They’re typically 2.5–3.5 cm wide, made from leather, and keep detailing minimal. If you wear suits often, two belts - one black and one brown - will cover all your bases.

Avoid flashy designs or quirky buckles. Subtlety is the key. Opt for slight texturing, minimal grain, or a polished finish.

Casual Belts: Style Without Rules

Casual belts let you loosen up. While there aren’t strict rules, some guidelines help:

  • Width: Narrow belts (1.5–2 cm) pair well with skinny pants. Wider belts work with chinos, jeans, or shorts.

  • Color Coordination: No need to match belt and shoe colors, but avoid clashing logos on both items.

  • Jeans Tags: Ensure the belt covers at least ¾ of the leather tag on your jeans’ waistband.

  • Wide Belts: For belts over 4 cm, double-check that they fit through loops and work with multiple outfits. Oversized belts can easily look off.

  • Mix and Match: Formal belts are a no-go for casual outfits.

Must-Have Belts for Every Wardrobe

Starting fresh or rebuilding your belt game? Here’s your go-to checklist:

  1. A classic black or brown formal belt for suits and dress shoes.

  2. A light brown casual belt for jeans - plain leather, braided leather, or similar styles work great.

  3. A canvas belt for laid-back looks with jeans, chinos, or shorts.

Styling Tips for Belts

For Height: Match your belt with your pants or top to create a seamless, elongated look.

For Balance: If you’re tall, use brighter belts to add contrast and break up your silhouette.

For Harmony: Pair glossy leather belts with distressed jeans or vintage belts with tailored trousers.

Sometimes, skipping the belt altogether works best, especially when your pants fit like a glove. A minimalist, belt-free look can exude understated masculinity.

Suspenders: A Classic Alternative

Quick tip: never wear suspenders and a belt together - pick one, not both. Suspenders bring a vintage vibe to your outfit and work especially well for formal occasions or when you’re channeling a retro aesthetic.

Tie-too-long

Your belt isn’t just an accessory; it’s a statement. Make it count. 👌
