When it comes to field watches, it’s impossible to ignore the legacy of the Hamilton Khaki Field. Designed during World War II, it became the blueprint for military-style timepieces. But what happens when you mix that classic aesthetic with modern design thinking? Enter the Boldr Venture Automatic, a fresh take on the field watch for today’s adventurer.
If the name Boldr doesn’t ring a bell, don’t worry. They’re a micro-brand from Singapore with a knack for innovation. Unlike other small watchmakers looking to make a quick buck, Boldr delivers value - starting with their daring use of titanium.
Unboxing the Boldr Venture is an experience. It comes in a utilitarian plastic case reminiscent of a toolbox, aligning perfectly with the watch’s angular and rugged design. While simple, the packaging is practical and reusable, far surpassing the disposable boxes that dominate the market.
Titanium is the star of the show, giving the case its signature “matte” silver finish. This understated tone pairs beautifully with the watch’s robust, industrial aesthetic.
At 38mm in diameter and 12mm thick, the Boldr Venture packs a punch for its size. Its angular frame creates the illusion of a larger watch, yet thanks to the titanium, it remains surprisingly light on the wrist. Had this design been crafted in stainless steel, the added weight might have made it less comfortable.
Titanium doesn’t just keep things lightweight; it also enhances durability. This is particularly useful for a field watch meant to withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures.
The large and sturdy crown at the 4 o'clock position exudes a strong "mechanical" vibe.
The Boldr Venture Automatic is all about sharp edges and functional design. Its standout feature is the oversized screw-down crown positioned at 4 o’clock, giving the watch a mechanical vibe. This placement adds practicality while maintaining a clean, uncluttered look.
Flipping the watch over, you’ll find a meticulously engraved screw-down case back. Boldr incorporates its logo into a striking “X” design, adding a touch of craftsmanship to an already sturdy build. The 200m water resistance is just another nod to its utility-focused roots.
The dial sticks to field watch tradition: large, legible hour markers, a 24-hour inner ring, and luminous dots at each hour. The luminous hands and markers ensure excellent readability, even in low-light conditions.
One standout feature is the bright orange-accented second hand - a small but bold touch that adds character. However, the size difference between the hour and minute hands could be more pronounced for quicker readability.
True to its field watch DNA, the Boldr Venture uses sapphire crystal with an anti-glare coating. Scratch-resistant and durable, sapphire is a premium material, especially at this watch’s price point.
The included NATO strap is sturdy, with strong stitching and a titanium buckle that matches the case.
While the strap is high-quality, it may not suit everyone - especially those with slimmer wrists. The added thickness from the NATO strap might feel bulky, but swapping it for a sleek titanium bracelet (sold separately for 2.5 million VND) is a solid alternative.
It seems like the Nato strap that came with it doesn't quite suit me.
But it seems like this strap doesn't really suit me, as my wrist is small and slim, while the watch itself has a thick design. Plus, the Nato strap, with its two-layer fabric, makes my wrist look even smaller 😅. This Nato strap would definitely look better on a thicker and larger wrist.
Another option is a titanium strap made from the same material as the watch.
The titanium strap feels more sturdy.
The retail price of the titanium strap is 2.5 million VND.
Inside the Boldr Venture Automatic ticks the trusted Seiko NH35A movement, boasting 24 jewels and a 39-40 hour power reserve. Known for its reliability, this movement is a favorite among micro-brands, ensuring consistent performance without breaking the bank.
At just 7 million VND, the Boldr Venture Automatic offers incredible value. From its titanium build to its rugged design and reliable mechanics, this watch punches above its weight. Whether you’re venturing into the wild or simply looking for a stylish everyday timepiece, the Boldr Venture is a modern field watch worth your attention.
