Double Denim: The Fearless Approach

Writer's picture: Tom GoedhartTom Goedhart

Double denim has long been seen as risky territory. Pairing two denim pieces can quickly go wrong without the right balance. But with a bit of know-how, pulling off this look isn’t nearly as tricky as it seems. The key to success? Contrast. Unless you're opting for an all-black ensemble, mixing shades is the secret to mastering double denim.

Here’s a guide to wearing double denim with style and confidence, proving it's a move worth making 😉

High Contrast is Your Best Friend

The simplest rule for a flawless double denim look is contrast. Choose top and bottom pieces in noticeably different shades. For example, a white denim jacket over deep indigo jeans creates a striking contrast that’s visually interesting while avoiding the risk of looking too “matchy.”

All-Black Everything

When it comes to monochromatic denim, black is the one exception to the contrast rule. Both black jeans and a black denim jacket work because dark tones minimize the denim effect, creating a sleek, cohesive outfit. To keep things interesting, play with details like pockets, buttons, or textures.

The pocket detail and snap buttons add a touch of playfulness to the dark-colored outfit.

For a softer take, mix in dark gray pieces for some subtle depth.

If black isn't your choice, you can opt for traditional indigo blue.

Coordinated Blues

Feeling a bit more adventurous? Stick to the classic blue denim, but layer varying shades for a fresh take.

This outfit pairs a light blue denim shirt over a navy t-shirt, along with heavily distressed dark blue jeans that are almost black. In this case, the shirt becomes the standout color, shining brightly against the darker backdrop.

Both the jacket and pants are in shades of blue, with the contrast coming from the varying tones and distressed effects.

Blue & White

For a clean, minimalist approach, blue and white are a killer combo 🤩.

A crisp white denim jacket paired with blue jeans (or vice versa) is effortlessly stylish. Add some white sneakers, and you’ve got a look that’s both fresh and versatile.

Light Tones

Double denim doesn’t have to be dark and rugged. Light tones like cream, off-white, and light gray can soften the look while keeping it sharp.

Try layering a white tee under a cream denim jacket with light gray jeans for a laid-back yet refined outfit.

There are many alternatives for double denim. For the outfit above, you could switch to a dark-colored jacket instead of a light pastel one.
