There's no worse feeling than leaving the barber with a fresh cut only to realize it doesn’t suit your face at all - or worse, it draws attention to features you’d rather downplay. A great hairstyle is more than just a look; it’s like a luxury accessory that balances and enhances your face’s natural shape. From sharp contours to rounded features, the right hairstyle is all about working with your unique angles. Let's dive into seven general face shapes and discover the best hairstyles for each.

Identifying Your Face Shape

Not sure where to start? Take a straightforward, no-filter selfie and match it against the descriptions below to determine your face shape:

  1. Round Face: Soft and nearly symmetrical with minimal angles or prominent features.

  2. Oval Face: This ideal shape is longer than it is wide, with balanced proportions and smooth lines along the jaw and hairline.

  3. Oblong Face: Essentially an elongated oval, with slightly narrower and softer features.

  4. Square Face: Characterized by equal width and a strong jawline, creating an assertive look.

  5. Triangle Face: A broader jawline and chin taper up to a narrower forehead.

  6. Diamond Face: Wide, prominent cheekbones with a narrower forehead and chin.

  7. Heart-Shaped Face: A broad hairline and temples that taper towards the chin.

Oval Face

The oval face is a dream for hairstyles; nearly every cut works here. Experiment with lengths and textures, but try to avoid long bangs - they can make your face look rounder than it actually is. Oval faces also suit any style of glasses, making this shape incredibly versatile.

Square Face

With a strong jawline as the focal point, the square face suits a variety of cuts. However, short styles with defined edges will accentuate that masculine, chiseled look.

To balance your face’s natural proportions, consider adding a little length on top; spiked styles and light curls work well to add dimension and a youthful vibe. Short sides with a longer top keep things in harmony without weighing down your look.

Oblong Face

As an elongated version of the oval, the oblong face works best with styles that bring balance. Keep the sides a little longer, ideally no shorter than a few centimeters above the ears, and aim for bangs that hug the forehead for an overall cohesive look.

For a layered, textured style, keep the top to around 2cm beyond the crown - this adds fullness without emphasizing the face’s length.

Round Face

Round faces benefit from sharp, structured cuts to create angles where they’re needed most. Avoid slick-back styles, as they can lack definition and may create an overly rounded effect. If you’re keen on an undercut, keep the top a little textured or diagonal to add angles and depth.

Diamond Face

The diamond face requires balance: keep some length on the sides to soften the width of the cheekbones, and aim for volume at the forehead and chin. A lightly layered cut with bangs swept to the side will add softness and fullness, which helps balance out sharp cheekbones.

Heart-Shaped Face

For a heart-shaped face, the focus is on filling out the chin area while balancing a broad forehead. Longer hairstyles with side-swept bangs or an undercut with longer top layers work best here, while super short cuts should be avoided as they bring too much attention to the upper face.

Triangle Face

This shape calls for volume at the forehead to balance out a strong jawline. Thick layers and side-swept bangs are ideal, adding height and width to the upper face. Play with different textures to soften the jawline and create a more harmonious look.
