Starting Strong: Tips for Choosing Your Debut Timepiece

Updated: Dec 16

Some of my friends never quite picked up the habit of wearing a watch. One friend once said, "In this digital age, why bother with a watch when my phone does everything?" He had a point, but he missed a crucial detail: modern watches are more than just timepieces; they’re stylish accessories that can elevate your look. A well-chosen watch not only completes your outfit but can also enhance your overall fashion statement.

Do you see it the same way? Picture a man checking his wrist or rolling back his sleeve to glance at his watch. That simple act exudes an air of sophistication. So, if you’re yet to invest in a watch, here’s what you need to consider before making this stylish addition to your wardrobe:

Opt for a Metal Strap Watch

When choosing your first watch, a metal strap is a smart choice due to its versatility. While leather straps can also suit both casual and formal occasions, they may not be the best for everyone, especially in Vietnam’s humid climate. Leather can discolor, wear out, and develop an unpleasant odor if you tend to sweat.

Metal strap watches are not only durable but can seamlessly transition between various styles - from suits and dress shoes to jeans and sneakers. Silver is the classic color for metal straps, but if a leather strap catches your eye, don’t hesitate! You can always switch it out later if needed. 😉

Select a Simple, Minimalist Design

For most Vietnamese wrists, a watch face size of 38-42mm is ideal. Going larger may lead to an awkward look, as if you’re wearing a watch meant for someone much bigger - or worse, like a kid sporting a toy watch.

Keep the design simple. While it might be tempting to choose a flashy 6-hand chronograph watch, your first watch should ideally be a classic 3-hand model with a date function - simple yet effective.

Ensure the Right Fit

It’s common for guys to wear their watches too loosely, which can diminish the watch’s appeal, regardless of its price tag.

To check the fit, give your wrist a gentle shake. If the watch stays put, you’re in good shape! If it slides around, consider adjusting the strap - removing links for a metal strap or adding holes for a leather one. For leather, I’d recommend replacing the strap entirely instead of punching additional holes in the original.

Set a Reasonable Budget

Your budget is a personal matter, and while it's tempting to splurge, it's wise to hold back on your first watch. You want to build confidence in your choice before making a significant investment.

For quality options at affordable to mid-range prices, consider brands like Timex, Breda, Swatch, Citizen, or Seiko.

With these tips, you're well on your way to finding a watch that suits your style and becomes a cherished accessory!
