Fugashin Saigon, a distinctive brand based in Ho Chi Minh City, focuses on delivering timeless, classic shoe styles. Unlike other shoe stores, Fugashin prefers to take a more reserved approach: no frequent Facebook updates, no lookbooks, and no ads. As a result, many are unaware of this gem that has been around for four years.
Founded by a Japanese owner, Fugashin reflects the essence of Japan’s dedication to quality and craftsmanship. The brand’s philosophy revolves around letting the quality of its shoes speak for itself.
When preparing for an important meeting, I spent hours searching in Hanoi for the perfect pair of oxford shoes, but nothing felt right. I then decided to take a flight to Ho Chi Minh City and planned a visit to Fugashin. After contacting them ahead of time, I arrived the next day and, after a brief yet careful selection, I decided to purchase the classic Sanjo oxford lace-up shoes. At first glance, Sanjo may look like a traditional black oxford, a design that's been around for centuries. However, at a price of 4,000,000 VND for a ready-to-wear shoe, the Sanjo offered a unique experience that exceeded my expectations.
Review After 15 Wears (Bought in April, but I couldn’t wear them daily due to interruptions)
Shoe Name: Sanjo
Last: TP-503
Made In: Vietnam
Upper Material: Stiff, shiny Italian calf leather – structured and sleek.
Lining: Leather lining for a luxurious feel.
Sole: Leather sole – known for its long-term comfort, but best suited for "safe" environments. If you're walking on Vietnamese streets for a few kilometers, a leather sole may not be your best option.
Additional Features
Anti-wear protection on the sole.
Fugashin logo on the insole.
Blue shoebox that catches the eye.
Fit
Sanjo fits almost like a bespoke shoe for me. I might’ve been lucky, as when I arrived, the store was nearly sold out. Keep in mind that Fugashin follows the UK shoe sizing system (sizes 6-9 UK), which differs from the usual sneaker sizing. I wear a 42 EURO or 8.5 US, but my Fugashin size is 7 UK.
Comfort
Premium leather shoes can be tough at first wear, which is one of the telltale signs of high-quality craftsmanship. Leather needs time to mold to your feet - a process known as the break-in period. For the Sanjo, it took about 2.5 months to reach full comfort, though after just 2-3 weeks, I could already feel them softening and adapting to my feet.
Warranty
Fugashin offers a one-year sole warranty. If the sole is damaged due to manufacturing defects within the first year, they will replace it for free.
Service
Fugashin’s staff is another highlight. The professionalism, passion, and deep knowledge of shoes were impressive. Even though I arrived early at 9 AM, the staff greeted me warmly, showed me a variety of options, and gave valuable advice. As someone with experience in the shoe industry, I was genuinely impressed by their understanding of shoe styles, materials, lasts, and fitting. When I tried on a pair of shoes that didn’t suit me, they gave me honest advice not to purchase them.
Conclusion
At 4,000,000 VND, the Fugashin Sanjo, with its Goodyear welted construction, offers incredible value for money compared to similar products in terms of quality. If you're serious about investing in your shoe collection, a visit to Fugashin Saigon is a must.
