The Art of Polite Persuasion: Addressing Issues with Style

Updated: Dec 16, 2024

Picture this: you’re out at a restaurant, looking forward to a great meal, and then something goes wrong. Maybe the service is slow, the food arrives cold, or your order isn’t right. It happens, and it can get under your skin - but here’s the kicker: how you handle it matters. Losing your cool isn’t going to make things better, and you’ll probably regret it later. The secret? Keep your composure.

Now, staying calm doesn’t mean letting things slide or holding your frustration in until you’re home and ready to write a scathing review online. Instead, speak up, but do it with style - like a true gentleman.

Stay Cool

When your food arrives cold or not as you ordered, call the waiter over as soon as possible. Explain the issue calmly, without raising your voice. Take a deep breath, maybe a sip of water, and wait for them to address it.

Raising your voice in this situation isn’t advisable. Stay calm, take a sip of cool water, and signal to speak with the server.

No one likes being put on the spot, and the restaurant staff will appreciate your calmness. A little patience and courtesy can go a long way. 😉

Handle It In-House, Not Online

Social media is often a go-to for venting, but it doesn’t need to be your first option. Sure, reviews are important, and many people read them to decide where to eat, but if something goes wrong, address it with the restaurant directly before hitting the keyboard.

Let’s say you find a fly in your soup or your steak’s overcooked. Flag down a server or ask to speak to the manager. You’d be surprised how willing good restaurants are to fix issues on the spot. Only if they’re unhelpful should you consider sharing your experience online.

Don’t Expect Freebies

If they fix the issue, whether with a fresh, hot dish or even a complimentary item, you’ve got what you came for. Some restaurants might throw in a drink or dessert as a goodwill gesture, and it’s a classy touch - show your appreciation!

At reputable spots, complaints are taken seriously. The dish may even go back to the chef, who’ll double-check for any mistakes. If your feedback is valid, they’ll make it right. If it’s simply a matter of taste, consider ordering something different next time. 😊

Know When to Let It Go

Mistakes happen, and if the staff genuinely does their best to make it right, offer a thank-you, a handshake, or just a smile. There’s no reason to let one small setback ruin a great meal with good company.
