The pandemic taught us a lot, especially that life is unpredictable. But one thing we can control is our wardrobe.
With a fresh year ahead, it’s time to reassess, refine, and ditch trends that no longer serve us. Let’s step into 2022 with a more polished and timeless sense of style. Here’s what you should leave in the past:
fast-fashion
Once upon a time, I was all about fast fashion - cheap, trendy, and abundant. I’d snag items without a second thought. But when I embraced the mantra “Buy less, buy better,” I realized how wasteful fast fashion is.
Let’s be real: fast fashion thrives on disposability. Sure, brands like Zara and H&M churn out stylish pieces, but they’re designed to cycle out quickly. You’re constantly tempted to replace yesterday’s haul with today’s new arrivals.
Not all fast fashion is poor quality - I’ve got some H&M sweaters and Topman jackets that have surprisingly lasted. But those are exceptions, not the rule. In 2022, let’s prioritize quality over quantity. Yes, investing in well-made pieces costs more upfront, but timeless, durable designs always pay off.
Plastic Footwear: Crocs
Can we finally agree that Crocs don’t belong outside? To me, they’re less “shoes” and more “indoor foot straps.”
I can’t fathom why they’ve gained such massive popularity. Sure, they’re comfortable, but so are loafers, slip-ons, and espadrilles - styles that actually look good. Unless you’re under 5 years old or chilling at home, please leave the clunky plastic behind. One vote for the extinction of Crocs in public spaces.
Ugly sneakers
It’s time to retire oversized, clunky sneakers. Since Balenciaga unleashed the Triple S in 2017, the trend has spiraled out of control, flooding menswear with shoes that look like they could cause mini-earthquakes.
2022 should be the year we say goodbye to these monstrous kicks and embrace sleeker, more classic styles.
Super Skinny Jeans
Ah, skinny jeans - the unofficial uniform of the 2010s. While they work for guys with perfectly straight legs, they’re impractical and uncomfortable for most. Add ugly sneakers to the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for fashion disaster.
Thankfully, wider-leg pants are back in vogue. Classic straight-leg and slim-fit options are universally flattering and far more comfortable. These styles are timeless - no trend can replace their staying power.
Muscle-Fit Clothing
Muscle-fit is a misnomer - it’s just code for way too tight. And while it might sound like a gym-goer’s dream, in reality, it’s a nightmare.
On a muscular frame, muscle-fit shirts create a look that’s, well... more “stuffed sausage” than “stylish gentleman.” Instead, opt for well-tailored pieces that skim the body without suffocating it.
2022 is about sophistication and balance, not suffocation in the name of fashion. Let’s leave the tight-fitting disasters behind.
