After wrapping up a business trip in Ho Chi Minh City, I stepped off the plane at Noi Bai Airport and was greeted by a refreshingly cold breeze. October has truly arrived, and winter is knocking on the door!
Around this time, many of us start thinking about adding a warm coat to our wardrobes. Some may have already rushed out to buy one, but remember, a good coat is an investment, and its quality can make a big difference. After all, expensive doesn’t always equate to better!
With that in mind, I’m sharing a few key tips for selecting the right winter coat. I also plan to explore more stores in Hanoi (and perhaps Ho Chi Minh City) to find some great options to make my recommendations even more personal.
Beige Is the Color of the Season!
Invest for the Long Run
A winter coat is an item you’ll want to keep for at least a couple of years, so it’s essential to choose one made from quality material. Just like I recommend investing in timeless pieces such as wallets, watches, and belts, coats should be treated the same way. Avoid those cheaper synthetic fabrics that seem like a steal - they may save you money upfront, but will they hold up over time?
When it comes to style, less is more. Simple, classic designs will never go out of style and are far more versatile. A patterned, intricate coat might not excite you the next season, but a basic one can be worn with nearly any outfit.
A jacket should complement the size of the outfit worn underneath.
Coats are the outermost layer, which means you’ll likely be wearing sweaters, shirts, or t-shirts underneath. As a result, consider going up a size when shopping for a coat (depending on the style) to ensure there’s room for layering. If a coat feels tight around the shoulders or armpits when trying it on with just one layer beneath, it’s probably best to size up.
Choose Warm, Durable Materials
Wool, fleece, and genuine leather are classic materials for a reason - they keep you warm and last for years. Many coats also come with detachable elements like vests or hoods, adding practicality for changing weather conditions.
Don’t Overlook the Details
Pay attention to the small things. Check all the pockets - both interior and exterior - to ensure they’re functional. Also, opt for coats that come with spare buttons. Keep them safe after purchase so you’ll have a matching replacement if needed. A coat with mismatched buttons can quickly lose its polished appearance.
With these tips in mind, you’ll be ready to invest in a coat that will serve you well through many winters to come.
