I’ve talked about styling for slim people before - mostly focusing on summer looks 😅. But I’ve realized I missed a few key points, so let me make it up to you with a more detailed guide. Hopefully, these tips will help take some of the stress out of dressing for a slimmer frame.
Let’s be honest - not everyone can pull off the ultra-skinny vibe of Hedi Slimane, right? 😅
Now, I can’t magically give you a few extra pounds (wish I could!), but I do have some tips that can help you create the illusion of a fuller frame 😜
Skip the Tight Clothes 😅
The myth that slim people need to wear super tight clothes to "fit better" is just that - a myth. What you really want are clothes that help create proportionate body shapes. Skinny jeans and ultra-slim shirts? Not the move. But that doesn’t mean you should run straight to the store for XXL sizes either. The key is to wear clothes that fit comfortably, without squeezing the life out of you 😉.
Buy clothes that fit, not ones so tight they leave you gasping for air.
Beware of Stripes
Pinstripes are often linked to power - think Wall Street execs in their sharp suits. But for those of us with a more modest frame, they don’t work quite as well. Stripes have a unique way of deceiving the eye - they make tall people appear even taller and help fuller figures look sleeker. Unfortunately, they don’t do the same for slim bodies. Instead, go for checks, plaids, or even florals for a pattern that flatters.
Layer Like a Pro
Winter is your friend when it comes to adding some visual bulk. Think sweaters over shirts, scarves under coats, or layering a shirt over a T-shirt. Layering adds dimension and creates the illusion of more volume. But, don't go crazy - stick to about three layers for balance.
Create Balance in Your Outfit
Balance is the name of the game. Are you teased for having "chicken legs"? 😂 Well, pairing a bulky coat with skinny jeans is a no-go. Similarly, tight T-shirts with straight-fit pants can create odd proportions. Aim for balance by mixing pieces that complement each other. Avoid dividing your body into contrasting, chaotic shapes.
Go Big with Patterns
Big patterns? They’re your secret weapon. While large prints can make bigger guys appear bulkier, they can add volume to a slimmer figure when used correctly. Windowpanes, Prince of Wales checks, or even wide stripes can work wonders.
That said, don’t overdo it! Stick to one bold pattern and keep the rest of your outfit simple for a clean, stylish look.
Outfit Ideas for Slim Guys:
Suits: Double-breasted suits with subtle shoulder padding can create the illusion of broader shoulders and a fuller frame.
Pants: Go for straight-fit or slim-fit pants. If you want to add some volume to your legs, corduroy is a great option.
Shirts: A crew neck or turtleneck sweater can help balance out a slim shape. Stay away from V-necks, which can emphasize a lean frame.
Coats: Choose straight-fit coats and overcoats that hit above the knee. This will give you some extra body definition and create a fuller look.
