Rainy Day Style: How to Look Good When the Sky Is Gloomy

Writer's picture: Tom GoedhartTom Goedhart

One of my least favorite things about living in Hanoi is dealing with the dreary weather. The overcast skies and persistent drizzle create a damp atmosphere that can make stepping outside feel like a chore - let alone figuring out what to wear. However, whether it’s rain or shine, our choice of style should be in our hands, right?

So, what should you wear on a rainy day? The key is to balance practicality with style, using items that are easily accessible in Vietnam.

Mackintosh Coat

First up, let's talk about the Mackintosh coat - not to be confused with Apple’s Mac computers! This term refers to waterproof coats made from stylish, high-quality fabric, allowing you to stay chic without looking like a soggy mess in traditional raincoats. Typically made from rubber-coated cotton, Mackintosh coats are soft, lightweight, and surprisingly waterproof. I previously introduced the Stutterheim coat as a fantastic option.

The best part? A Stutterheim raincoat can seamlessly transition into your regular coat when the skies clear.

These coats are not only stylish but also practical.

However, the price can be steep, often reaching $700 to $800. Luckily, living in Vietnam has its perks. I once snagged a lightweight navy Mackintosh from Massimo Dutti for just a few hundred thousand VND - perfect for those drizzly days! With a bit of effort, you can find similar deals at shops specializing in exported goods. While they may not compare to pricier brands, they’re convenient and stylish enough for everyday wear.

Mackintosh coats typically reach thigh length, providing ample coverage against the rain while allowing you to layer comfortably underneath. Pairing a navy or dark gray coat with a polished outfit can elevate your style, or opt for a shorter version as an alternative to a windbreaker on chilly days.

Windbreaker

Windbreakers are another go-to for rainy days. They’re lightweight, easy to carry, and although they aren’t always fully waterproof, they dry quickly, which is a major plus in humid conditions. Most come with hoods, making them ideal for quick escapes outside.

Wearing a windbreaker is second nature to many, but here’s a tip: don’t shy away from bright, youthful colors! Just because the sky is dreary doesn’t mean your outfit has to be. Brands like Nike, Adidas, and Puma offer plenty of stylish options that are readily available in Vietnam.

Gray Pants

When it comes to pants, light colors are a definite no-go on rainy days - who wants to deal with mud splashes or unsightly watermarks? Blue jeans are an improvement, but they can still show dirt easily (trust me, I just had to scrub mine yesterday!).

Instead, reach for gray pants. This versatile shade is perfect for mixing and matching, plus it does a great job of hiding stains. While you’ll eventually need to wash them, gray is a great option for those days when you want to minimize laundry.

Gray is the easiest color to hide stains.

Gray pants can also work beautifully in monochromatic outfits. Pair them with a black or gray jacket and shoes for an effortlessly stylish, all-neutral look that’s more dynamic than a stark all-black ensemble.

Hiking boots

If you're looking for footwear, consider hiking boots from brands like Timberland, Clarks, or Dr. Martens. They’ll keep your feet warm and dry, have thick rubber soles for traction, and are slip-resistant - ideal for wet conditions. While I’m not personally a fan, they truly shine on rainy days.

When wearing boots, opt for casual attire. A graphic tee or chambray shirt pairs well for a relaxed yet stylish vibe.

Items to Avoid

In addition to light-colored pants, here are some items to steer clear of:

  • Wool sweaters: These can soak up moisture and develop unpleasant odors in humid conditions.

  • Formal leather shoes: While I appreciate a nice pair of leather shoes, they really don’t fare well in the rain, and I’ve had to send mine to the cleaners after a downpour. It’s a painful realization, especially when quality leather can be pricey. Suede shoes should be avoided even more; nothing destroys suede faster than water. If you must wear leather, invest in a good waterproof spray, like Woly from Germany or Saphir from France.

  • Dress pants: Pairing dress pants with boots can be a tricky combo, and if they get dirty, jeans or khakis offer a more forgiving look. Dress pants are often associated with a polished appearance, making it difficult to maintain that image in wet weather.

It looks stylish, but just wait until it gets soaked!
