Footsteps Through Fashion History

Nope, my stance on socks hasn’t wavered. I’m still firmly against white socks, and I’m all about letting your socks bring a pop of personality – especially if you’re keeping the rest of your outfit simple.

Back in the day, I was big on socks with animal prints – foxes, weasels, cats, rabbits, you name it… they were all in my drawer.

But these days, when I dig through my socks, I’m reaching more for the darker tones – usually a dependable dark gray or navy ribbed pair from Uniqlo. It’s not that I’ve lost love for the quirky prints; I just don’t reach for them as much anymore. I guess the simplest explanation is that I’m getting older 🙃.

These days, dark, solid socks are my default – whether it’s with sneakers or dress shoes.

That doesn’t mean I’m opposed to patterns. Occasionally, I’ll still pull out something with a bit of flair, but the urge just doesn’t come as often. My current style guide is pretty safe and simple: socks in the same tone as my pants (or sometimes my shoes), with the occasional subtle pattern.

Matching your socks to your pants gives a streamlined look to your lower half, which can be a plus if you’re aiming to appear a bit taller. Of course, plain socks can feel repetitive after a while, so a small, subtle pattern – like polka dots or geometric designs – can be a nice change without going overboard 😜.

And that’s it. This is really just a snapshot of my current style phase, a bit of an evolution in my everyday choices. If you’re mulling over sock options, here are a few essentials to keep in mind:

  • Don’t stress about perfect matches; let your socks show a bit of personality!

  • Thicker socks pair well with sneakers, while thin wool or cashmere are great for dress shoes.

  • When wearing socks, avoid exposing bare skin between pants and shoes. It creates a choppy, four-layer look that can feel messy.

  • Avoid those worn-out white sports socks with faded logos – they tend to clash with any outfit you’ve put effort into.
