Pitti Uomo has long been regarded as the ultimate fashion showcase for men, and for good reason. Held biannually in Florence, Italy, it’s often referred to as the "cradle" of classic menswear, highlighting masculinity through refined tailoring, accessories, and a balance of tradition and modern flair.
With each edition, there’s always something new to learn. Pitti Uomo 89, which wrapped up on January 15th, was no exception. Here's what stood out:
Checkered Suits and Blazers Take Center Stage
Pitti Uomo is synonymous with suits, and this year was no different. At Pitti Uomo 89, checkered patterns were everywhere. From traditional checks to windowpane and the iconic Prince of Wales check, there was a check for every taste.
The double-breasted suit also made a strong comeback, providing a stylish choice for men with a bit more height (and a bit more substance), offering a sophisticated silhouette and a sharp look.
A Pop of Color in Classic Styles
While classic menswear often sticks to neutral shades like navy, charcoal, and gray, Pitti Uomo 89 proved that men aren't afraid to play with color.
Pastel blues, lime greens, and coral reds made an appearance, adding a modern twist to classic tailoring. What made these bold choices work was the subtle balance: the vibrant hues were softened with neutral tones, ensuring they never felt too overpowering.
The Long Coat Trend
Three coat styles dominated the scene at Pitti Uomo 89. Light-toned coats - think cobalt blue, light green, and burgundy - took the spotlight, offering a fresh take on outerwear.
Fur-collar coats were also a bold statement piece for the daring gentleman, while large checkered patterns brought a timeless yet eye-catching appeal to the mix.
Hats Everywhere – But Keep It Classic
Pitti Uomo 89 was a hat lover’s paradise. From beanies and berets to snapbacks, hats were an essential part of the look. But to maintain that classic masculine vibe, the fedora and pork pie hats (with their flat top and short brim) stood out as the top choices.
Interestingly, while the clothing embraced vibrant colors, hats tended to stick to more subdued tones, with only a rare burst of boldness in the occasional bright hue.
The Ankle Show
With Florence's mild weather, showing a little ankle became the perfect styling trick. Many gentlemen rolled up their pant cuffs or chose cropped trousers to give a glimpse of their shoes - and sometimes socks.
This simple move freshened up even the heaviest suits, and whether paired with dress shoes or sneakers, it added an unexpected lightness to the outfit.
