Summer Etiquette: Staying Cool and Courteous

Staying both polite and comfortable in the summer heat can feel like a challenging balancing act. You might assume that looking sharp means opting for tucked-in dress shirts and tailored trousers, while comfort leans towards casual T-shirts and flip-flops. But with a few smart choices, it’s entirely possible to blend these two aspects seamlessly.

For me, comfort is the cornerstone of style. When your outfit feels good, confidence comes naturally. Here are some essential tips for striking that balance this summer.

Choose the Right Fabrics

When the sun is blazing, lightweight cotton and linen should be your go-to fabrics. Look for T-shirts with high cotton content and linen shirts that embrace their natural wrinkles for a relaxed look.

But here’s a misconception: thin fabrics aren’t always cooler. Breathability matters more than just lightness. Tightly woven lightweight materials can feel stifling, while loosely woven, thicker fabrics can allow better airflow, helping to regulate body temperature.

The shirt is made from lightweight and breathable cotton seersucker, tailored by H Tailor.

Opt for open-weave fabrics that let air circulate freely. When held to the light, you should see small gaps between the threads - these are your best friends for summer comfort. Avoid synthetics that trap heat and create uncomfortable rustling sounds; they’ll turn your outfit into a sauna.

Keep Deodorant Handy

While I personally don’t struggle with odor, it’s smart to be prepared. Having a deodorant spray or roll-on at hand can save you from those embarrassing moments when you raise your arms in a crisp dark shirt and reveal unsightly wet patches.

Invest in Three Essential Shoe Types

  • Leather loafers: Perfect for achieving a smart-casual vibe without sacrificing comfort.

  • Casual sneakers: A versatile option that pairs well with both shorts and trousers.

  • Lace-up shoes: Choose leather or suede for those special occasions that demand a bit more polish.

Embrace a Looser Fit

While many favor slightly tight-fitting clothing for a neat look, don’t shy away from looser fits in the summer. Consider straight-cut outfits that offer comfort without being overly baggy. Think boxy shirts or straight-leg trousers that allow for movement and breathability.

Opt for Invisible Socks

Invisible socks are a must-have for rolled-up or cropped pants. Showing a bit of skin can enhance your summer look, keeping it fresh and stylish 😂.

Stay Fresh with a Trimmed Haircut

A fresh haircut can make a world of difference in how you feel. Ask your barber for a lighter cut, with closely shaved sides and back to allow airflow. Thick hair can be a recipe for discomfort in the heat, so keep it manageable.

Have Two Pairs of Sunglasses

Why two pairs? To combat the sun and add a touch of versatility to your look. Switching up your sunglasses can keep your summer style feeling fresh and exciting.

With these tips, you’ll stay stylishly comfortable all summer long. Enjoy the season without compromising on either style or comfort!
