Grace Under the Sun: Navigating Warm-Weather Manners

Updated: Dec 18, 2024

Let’s face it, finding the balance between staying polite and comfortable in the summer heat can feel like a luxury. You might think being polite requires a tucked-in shirt, fabric trousers, and polished leather shoes, while comfort screams t-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops as you dash around the streets.

In reality, you can have both if you choose the right fabrics, mix your outfits wisely, and follow a few simple tricks.

For me, style and comfort always go hand in hand. When your clothes aren’t making you uncomfortable, confidence comes naturally. Here are some tips for those of us trying to strike the perfect balance between looking good and staying cool.

Choose the Right Fabric

To avoid sweating through your clothes in the summer heat, opt for t-shirts made mostly of cotton, lightweight linen shirts that have that natural wrinkle for a relaxed vibe, or slim-fit trousers and chinos.

But here's a misconception: thinner fabrics don’t necessarily mean cooler. While it seems logical, it’s not always the case. The weight of the fabric doesn't directly affect breathability. A lightweight, tightly woven fabric can feel more suffocating than a thicker, loosely woven material.

Linen and cotton shirts are light, breathable, and perfect for the summer heat.

When you hold a shirt up to the light, you should see tiny gaps between the threads. These openings allow for better airflow, keeping your body temperature regulated. Thicker fabrics also help shirts keep their shape, unlike flimsy, saggy materials that lose form quickly. It’s about maintaining the right balance between breathability and structure.

Avoid fabrics loaded with synthetic fibers, as they often trap heat, create uncomfortable rustling sounds, and basically turn into an "oven" in the summer. Trust me, don't go there!

Deodorant is Your Friend

As someone who sweats easily in hot weather, deodorant is always in my bag. While I’m lucky that my sweat doesn’t cause any odor, it's still handy to keep a spray or roll-on close by. It’s much more practical than dealing with embarrassing wet patches on your shirt when you raise your arms, especially when you’re wearing something stylish.

Invest in These 3 Types of Shoes

First, go for a pair of leather loafers with a light sole. They’re perfect for a smart-casual vibe. Second, a pair of simple, solid-colored sneakers are versatile and easy to match with both shorts and pants.

Finally, invest in a pair of leather or suede lace-up shoes to be prepared for more formal or special occasions.

Loosen Up Your Look

I know, it’s tempting to always wear fitted clothes for that sharp, neat look, but sometimes, going for something a bit looser is the way to go. This doesn’t mean oversized shirts or pants dragging on the ground, but boxy shirts or straight-leg trousers can look just as sharp while offering you the comfort you need in the heat.

Go for No-Show Socks

If you’re wearing cropped pants or rolling up your trousers this summer, no-show socks are essential. It’s an easy way to stay cool while keeping things stylish - plus, showing a little more skin is always more appealing in hot weather, right? 😎

Trim Your Hair

After each haircut, I always feel lighter and more relaxed, and I’m sure you do too. Head to your regular barber for a light trim, with the sides and back shaved close for better airflow. Sometimes, thick or long hair can be the cause of unnecessary discomfort in the summer.

Own Two Pairs of Sunglasses

Why not? Not only will they protect your eyes from the sun, but having two pairs allows you to switch it up and avoid getting bored with the same look.
