Dressing well in summer may seem like a breeze compared to winter. In colder months, layering can smooth over body quirks, but pulling off a sharp winter look isn’t easy, and quality coats and sweaters don’t come cheap!
Still, summer style isn’t foolproof. Simplicity is tricky, and quick choices can lead to summer fashion faux pas. While style is personal, here are a few of my hot-weather don’ts for you to consider.
Flashing Socks
A big no for me in summer? Socks on display. Picture a hot, sunny day, and suddenly - thick socks popping out below the hem. Not exactly cool, right? Give your feet a break.
The saying “Better barefoot than sockless in shoes” has some merit, though; socks absorb sweat and help with odor control. For summer, try “invisible” socks that sit low, making cuffed pants look fresh and effortless.
Don’t these breezy-looking legs feel so much more comfortable?
Ditching Long Sleeves
Wondering why anyone would reach for a jacket in the heat? Think twice! You might want that long-sleeve shirt for a midday outing, a light cardigan for a chilly office, or a thin blazer for an evening out. Stash a cardigan at the office - you’ll thank yourself later.
Keeping a cardigan at the office is never a bad idea.
Tight Chino Trap
Chinos - from shorts to full-length pants - are a summer classic. But comfort is key. Stick to regular-fit or slim-fit chinos, and avoid skinny cuts. Non-stretchy skinny chinos in the heat? Just don’t.
The Wrong Shades
Not all sunglasses are equal. Choosing frames that suit your face is essential. A classic style will elevate your look without overshadowing it.
Sunglasses Indoors
It’s frustrating to see sunglasses indoors. Unless you’re handling a medical issue, sunglasses in a shaded setting are an overreach. And for the love of style, take them off in elevators.
Wearing sunglasses in the elevator? Please, just don’t!
Color Overload
Warm weather doesn’t mean going wild with colors. Choose one stand-out piece, like a bright shirt or sneakers, but let the rest of your outfit play it cool.
An orange shirt pairs well with navy chinos, while clashing colors on top and bottom? You’ll look more like a fabric shop than fashion-forward.
Heavy Perfume
Summer’s heat makes heavy scents unbearable. Instead, opt for light, refreshing fragrances with citrus or mint notes. A few favorites: Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, Lacoste Blanc, or Jean Paul Gaultier Le Beau Male.
Shorts at the Office
Some offices have relaxed dress codes, but shorts still seem out of place at work. Save them for the beach or weekend, and for work, try slim-fit trousers in breathable materials. Trashness and H&M have some great options that’ll keep you cool and polished.
