If you find yourself surrounded by solid-colored outfits, it’s only natural to crave a few patterned pieces to spice up your wardrobe. Especially during the colder months, the inclination to wear dark hues for warmth can become monotonous. So, why not embrace some flair?
A plaid blazer or sport jacket is a versatile addition that can extend beyond chilly days, making it perfect for transitional seasons. I recently had a Glen Plaid blazer custom-made by H Tailor, featuring a rich brown base with striking pinkish-orange windowpane checks. Here are the key details about my blazer:
Material: 100% Wool
Structure: Full canvas
Shoulders: Lightly wrinkled "shirt shoulders" (heavy wrinkling can be overwhelming)
Buttons: 3 Roll 2
Pockets: Basic flap pockets
Buttonhole: Milanese buttonhole to match the light pink windowpane
Styling a patterned blazer may seem daunting, but it's quite manageable. While mixing multiple patterns can complicate your look, you can simplify it by letting the blazer take center stage and complementing it with solid colors. Here are four of my favorite ways to style this blazer:
For those frigid days, I layer the blazer under a gray overcoat, paired with a camel-yellow sweater. Both the overcoat and sweater align with the blazer’s color palette, ensuring a cohesive look. Traditional indigo blue jeans keep the style casual, while beige sneakers echo the brown tones in the blazer, enhancing the overall harmony.
Overcoat: Basso
Sweater: Uniqlo
Jeans: Orslow
Sneakers: Artisan Lab
This ensemble leans towards a more refined vibe, incorporating a shirt that isn’t just plain light blue but features subtle stripes. The coordination of patterns follows a small-to-large ratio, from the shirt to the blazer. Sand-colored trousers complement the outfit, with a hint of the waistband buckle peeking out. Burgundy loafers add a pop of color to the lower half. 😛

A white shirt is a staple for versatility. Pair it with navy blue chinos that have a higher hem for a comfortable fit, allowing patterned socks to peek through. Basic brown Derby brogues complete this look, showcasing the blazer as the outfit's star.

I love the light pink in the blazer's windowpane, so I requested matching Milanese buttonholes. I found a pink t-shirt in my wardrobe that had to make an appearance! For a playful twist, I chose white jeans with raw hems. A suede belt complements the color and material of the loafers.
