Own the Look with Confidence

Updated: Dec 23, 2024

When your wardrobe leans heavily on solids, adding a patterned piece is a game-changer. Especially in cooler months, when darker tones dominate, breaking the monotony with patterns can refresh your look.

Personally, I wanted something that wasn’t just for cold weather but could transition seamlessly into other seasons. A checkered blazer seemed like the perfect solution - versatile, stylish, and timeless.

I opted to have mine custom-made at H Tailor, choosing a Glen Plaid design in brown with subtle pink-orange windowpane stripes. Here’s a closer look at the blazer's details:

  • Material: 100% Wool

  • Structure: Full canvas

  • Shoulder Style: Lightly wrinkled shirt shoulder (too many wrinkles can feel overpowering on patterns)

  • Buttons: 3 Roll 2

  • Pockets: Classic flap pockets

  • Highlight: Milanese buttonhole with light pink trim to match the subtle checks

While patterned blazers can feel intimidating to style, they’re surprisingly easy to work with if you keep the rest of the outfit simple. By letting the blazer take center stage and sticking to solids, you can create effortlessly stylish looks. Here are four ways I’ve been styling mine:

For freezing days, layering is key. The blazer serves as the mid-layer, with a gray overcoat on the outside and a camel sweater underneath. The tones harmonize perfectly with the blazer, creating a balanced color palette. For a casual vibe, I added indigo jeans and beige sneakers that tie back to the blazer’s warm brown tones.

  • Overcoat: Basso

  • Sweater: Uniqlo

  • Jeans: Orslow

  • Sneakers: Artisan Lab

Here’s a more polished look with a shirt that has a fine stripe pattern. The layering follows a simple principle: smaller patterns inside, larger ones outside. Sand-colored trousers complement the blazer, and burgundy loafers add a refined pop of color. Pro tip: details like a waistband clasp peeking through add a touch of personality.

  • Trousers: Boyant

  • Loafers: Morjas

A white shirt is a foolproof option, providing a clean backdrop for the blazer to shine. Navy chinos with a high cuff add a casual edge, and patterned socks peek through for a bit of fun. Brown Derby brogues finish the look with a classic touch.

The pink in the blazer’s check inspired me to highlight it with matching Milanese buttonholes on the lapel and sleeves. Pairing it with a pink t-shirt adds a playful vibe. White jeans with raw hems keep things light and casual, while a suede belt matches the loafers for a cohesive finish.

  • T-Shirt: Uniqlo

  • Jeans: Levi’s Made & Crafted

  • Loafers: Fugashin

  • Belt: Anderson’s

A checkered blazer like this isn’t just a wardrobe staple - it’s a versatile piece that can adapt to multiple occasions. Keep experimenting with combinations, and you’ll discover just how far this stylish item can take you!
