Reuzel Blue: The Vanilla-Scented Powerhouse for Your Hair

Writer's picture: Tom GoedhartTom Goedhart

Since I started working, I've had the pleasure of testing a wide range of hair products from all over the globe. It’s even more special when these products come from well-known brands, almost like friends sharing new discoveries with one another. One product that quickly became a favorite of mine is Hanz de Fuko Claymation, the "miraculous" wax that has worked wonders on my thick, stubborn hair.

Now, I’ll be honest: I’m not the type to stick with one product for long. I’ve had my moments with By Vilain Dynamite and Gold Digger - products I once believed would be my “final destination.” I’ve raved about these before, and no disrespect to By Vilain; it’s a brand with quality that’s tough to beat. But, I simply enjoy experimenting with new products. It’s all part of the fun!

Despite my history of wax obsession, I’ve never been fond of pomades - especially oil-based ones. They offer a great hold but can be a pain to wash out. Water-based pomades, on the other hand, solve that problem with their easy rinse, similar to gel, but they often lack the hold I need.

Then, I had the chance to try all three products from Reuzel, thanks to the talented barbers at Schorem. As you can imagine, there’s no question about the quality of these pomades. But, after a week of testing them, I still couldn’t shake my love for waxes.

My main issue with pomades has always been the greasy, sticky residue they leave after washing out. Reuzel’s water-based pomade, Reuzel Red, was a bit too weak for my hair.

But then came Reuzel Blue - a stronger, water-based pomade that promised to have the hold I craved. Schorem humorously described it as "the red with lots of steroids," and I couldn’t wait to see if it lived up to the hype.

Thanks to the generous folks at Barbaard, I got my hands on a full 12oz tin of Reuzel Blue, which is as big as a dinner plate. For that, I’m truly grateful to these bold Dutch entrepreneurs who’ve set up shop in Vietnam.

The 12oz Reuzel tin is as big as a rice bowl!

The first thing I noticed when I opened the tin was the vanilla scent. It’s warm, inviting, and instantly captivating. As for the pomade itself, it has a much denser consistency than Reuzel Red. When you apply it, you can feel the strong adhesion as it spreads between your hands.

Both are water-based pomades, but Reuzel Blue has a much thicker consistency than Reuzel Red.

With my medium-length quiff, Reuzel Blue offered the perfect amount of hold and shine. I’m not a fan of comb marks in my hair, so after using a comb, I usually run my fingers through my bangs for a more natural look. After a full day of wearing Reuzel Blue, I was impressed by its performance. Hold: 4/5, Shine: 4/5. Even after removing my helmet or breaking a sweat, my hair held its shape - just a quick touch-up with my fingers and it was back in place.

And here’s the result. Apologies for the breakout on my forehead - I’ve been staying up late a lot lately 😦

The texture of my hair felt smooth and cohesive with Reuzel Blue, and I didn’t experience any stickiness, even though I tend to sweat heavily. With Reuzel Red, my bangs would start falling flat by noon. The stronger hold of Reuzel Blue was definitely more than just marketing hype - it truly delivered.

I really love the smooth, cohesive texture of my hair when I use Reuzel Blue.

What truly sets Reuzel apart is its incredible scent range. Red offers a cola scent, Green has a minty apple fragrance, and Pink brings a classic apple scent. But for me, Reuzel Blue’s vanilla scent is a game-changer. I loved it so much that I skipped my usual cologne routine before leaving the house.

While I’m still loyal to waxes, I’ve found myself reaching for Reuzel Blue whenever I want something fresh. It’s the perfect pomade for those times I want to change things up without sacrificing performance.

For those interested in purchasing Reuzel, Barbaard is finalizing preparations to bring the product to Vietnam. You can visit their website: http://www.barbaard.com, though the online shopping function is not yet live. They’re also working on exciting long-term projects to bring Reuzel closer to classic hairstyle enthusiasts in Vietnam, especially fans of Schorem.

Tom and Guido, co-founders of Barbaard. I always joke that these are the two daring Dutch guys brave enough to take on Vietnam solo.

To top it off, Barbaard is planning a giveaway event featuring Reuzel Blue as the star. Stay tuned! 😉
