Schorem, which has inspired countless barbers worldwide, modestly describes their shop as a "small corner" in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Still riding the high of my idol sharing my post, I was in for another surprise: Schorem started chatting with me 😀 (yes, through Facebook inbox). Their conversational style was relaxed and humorous, even though I had no clue which of the tough guys I was talking to.
Reuzel embodies the finest distillation of Bertus and Schorem’s collective 50-plus years of barbering expertise.
After expressing my admiration and sharing a few light-hearted anecdotes, they asked if I knew about Reuzel. Having researched Schorem thoroughly, I was aware that Reuzel was their own line of pomades, essentially their brainchild. However, I hadn’t had the chance to try them out yet. It seemed they couldn’t accept that, insisting I "needed" to test all the Reuzel products they sent me.
I eagerly awaited about a week for the package to arrive in Vietnam, setting aside all my usual hair products to try out Reuzel’s trio 😀.
With over 50 years in the barbering and hair care industry, Bertus and Leen, the masterminds behind Schorem, have infused their expertise and insights into the Reuzel pomade line. “Reuzel” translates to... lard in Dutch. Don’t let the name fool you; this nostalgic nod from Schorem harks back to the days when pomades were crafted from animal fats and infused with apple scents. The term “pomade” actually derives from “pomme,” the French word for apple. Staying true to Schorem’s ethos, Reuzel is tailored for classic undercut, slick-back, and pompadour hairstyles.
The packaging design of Reuzel is just as “cool” as the barbers at Schorem.
Curious about my experience with Reuzel? Here’s the rundown:
Reuzel Green
This beeswax-based product lives up to its medium hold rating, proving quite powerful when applied to dry hair. Helmets are no issue - just run your fingers through your hair, and it’s back in shape. Reuzel Green adds a nice shine without making hair feel dry or stiff, allowing for restyling anytime without losing the original shape.
The only downside I found was that its hold diminishes on wet or freshly towel-dried hair, cutting the effectiveness in half since damp hair is heavier. However, this could work to your advantage if you're after a softer, messier undercut look.
Reuzel Green boasts a light, pleasant apple-mint scent, making it ideal for medium to long hair.
Rating: 4/5
Reuzel Red
Among the trio, Reuzel Red is the least impressive to me. It’s water-based, shines brightly, but offers below-average hold. If you’re looking for a shiny style that stays in place, this may not be your best bet. Blow-drying can slightly improve its hold, but it still didn’t cut it for me. My hair, which should have stayed swept back, often fell forward onto my forehead. Maybe it’s just my thick and coarse hair?
Despite its high shine, Reuzel Red feels neither greasy nor uncomfortable, featuring an addictive cola scent. I think this pomade suits sleek, gentlemanly slick-back styles perfectly. If you choose Reuzel Red in the morning, be prepared to reapply it halfway through the day for consistent hold.
Rating: 3/5
Reuzel Pink
The pink variant represents the pinnacle of Reuzel’s “power,” and it truly delivers. My thick, coarse hair finally found its match. It holds all day with minimal need for touch-ups and provides a moderate shine that isn’t overly flashy. I also lent Reuzel Pink to a friend with long slick-back hair, and he was thrilled: his hair stayed perfectly in place, and combing it back was a breeze.
Reuzel Pink is perfect for undercut styles that require a comb for shaping.
Being oil-based, Reuzel Pink can be tough to wash out, so I recommend using just a small amount each time. Rest assured, with its strong hold, even a fingertip’s worth can tame the most unruly hair. The subtle apple scent is refined and doesn’t overpower your cologne.
Rating: 4.5/5
Exciting news: Reuzel is set to launch a new blue pomade. This water-based product promises high shine and strong hold, potentially making it the perfect upgrade to Reuzel Red.
