Lately, I’ve been getting tons of questions about hair styling products, especially waxes: How do you use this one? Is it good? Does it work for my hair type? 😅 It can get overwhelming, but don’t worry, I’m here to break it down. First, the results of using styling products really depend on your hair type. What works wonders for one person might not give the same result for another, and you can’t just take someone else’s experience as a universal truth.
Now, as someone who’s tried quite a few different waxes and pomades, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the products I’ve used over the years. Hopefully, this helps you find the right fit for your hair! Let’s get into it! 😀
A quick heads-up: I have thick, coarse hair that's a bit like bamboo. It gets wild if left too long and is a pain to manage. If I skip styling in the mornings, I end up with a “bad hair day” where it sticks out all over the place. With that context, let’s dive into the reviews.
Davines No.2 Mat Moulding Gesso
I’ve been using this one for ages, since my early university days, and though I switched it up for a while, I always come back to it. 😄 It has a subtle fragrance, is easy to apply, and gives a great matte finish. What I really like is the strong hold - if I take off my helmet, I can just comb it with my fingers, and it’s back to looking great. I think it’s perfect for medium to long hair, especially if you’re rocking an undercut style.

L’Oreal Studio Line 7
Let’s be real: this one was a letdown. 🙄 Despite being marketed as a strong hold product, it just didn’t work for me. The texture is soft, making it easy to apply, but the results are underwhelming. It’s tough to keep the style intact, especially with slickback or pompadour looks, and it leaves hair looking greasy with a high shine. It’s more suited for women with loose, flyaway strands.

Uppercut Deluxe Pomade
Uppercut is a cool Australian brand, and their Deluxe Pomade gives an average hold. You might need a touch-up later in the day, but it has a soft, natural shine and a pleasant lavender scent. If you’ve got a longer undercut or slickback, this could work for you. The hold is decent, but if you need something more robust, you might want to look elsewhere.

Uppercut Deluxe Monster Hold Wax
If you need something with serious hold, this is it. 😎 As the name suggests, Monster Hold does not mess around. Even after wearing a helmet, a quick finger comb is enough to set your hair back in place. It works for almost any length and has a medium shine. The only downside is it’s tough to wash out - requires multiple washes and still leaves some residue. Because of that, I couldn’t stick with it long-term.

Fish Fix Controlling Hair Wax
I was totally duped into buying this, thanks to its reasonable price and vintage packaging. 🙄 What’s labeled as a wax is actually a gel in disguise, and it’s not pretty. It gives you stiff, spiky hair that doesn’t hold together, and once you put on a helmet, it’s game over. Honestly, this was a total miss for me.

By Vilain Dynamite Clay
This one is a daily staple for me. Dynamite Clay feels a bit stiff at first, but once you rub it in your hands and apply it, you’ll notice how easily it blends into your hair. It’s great for adding volume, especially around the fringe. It works well with medium to long hair and gives a slightly shiny finish, perfect for undercut styles.

By Vilain Gold Digger
If you have stubborn, unruly hair like mine, this is your hero. Gold Digger gives a matte finish and works wonders for trendy undercut styles without the greasy shine. It has a soft texture, making it easy to apply, and a small amount goes a long way. I like mixing it with Dynamite Clay (2:1 ratio) to get both volume and hold. The result is impressive - custom wax with a soft texture and strong hold.
