Tried and Tested: Hair Styling Products for Thick Hair

I’ve made it a habit to share my thoughts on every five new hair styling products I try. My reviews come with a disclaimer - they're entirely personal, as my hair is naturally thick and coarse. So, if you have a similar texture or just want to explore, here’s what I’ve been testing recently!

Hanz de Fuko Claymation

This is my go-to product and a true game-changer for unruly hair. Claymation is a thick wax with a faint, natural beeswax aroma. Its firm texture means you only need a small amount - warm it up between your palms and distribute evenly.

What I love most? Its resilience. After wearing a helmet, a quick finger comb brings my hair back to life. I’m currently rocking a medium-length quiff and aiming for a voluminous pompadour this winter - Claymation will stay in my arsenal for that goal.

Beyond performance, Hanz de Fuko's branding is stellar. Their lineup includes everything from waxes to their latest Gravity Paste. With ambassadors like David Beckham and Mariano di Vaio, this product has earned its hype.

Colonna Hair Mud

Affordable and versatile, Colonna Hair Mud surprised me during a recent haircut. Though labeled “mud,” it feels like a softer, stickier wax. Its pleasant scent and pliability make it ideal for short to medium hair lengths.

This product offers a soft hold with medium shine and is helmet-friendly - perfect for those on the go.

Reuzel blue

This water-based pomade has made me a fan of pomades. Reuzel Blue combines a thick texture with an irresistible vanilla scent - seriously, I could sniff this all day!

If only Reuzel Blue were edible - I can't get enough of that vanilla scent.

"Blue Pig" offers excellent hold and a sleek shine, ideal for slick-back or pompadour styles. Its moisturizing finish is another bonus, keeping your hair styled without stickiness.

Jack The Snipper Matte Creme

Created by Australian barbers, Jack The Snipper Matte Creme might be the strongest competitor to Claymation I’ve encountered. This thick, creamy product provides formidable hold, lasting through long days without separation or collapse.

However, it does leave a slightly stiff texture, making restyling less effortless compared to Claymation.

Jack The Snipper Pomade

The JTS pomade holds up to the high standards of the brand. While its water-based formula delivers impressive hold and shine, it leaves hair stiffer than I’d like, requiring damp hands for restyling.

The lavender scent is refreshing, and it shines in slick-back and classic pompadour looks.

These products each bring something unique to the table. Whether you’re aiming for soft hold, high shine, or unbeatable staying power, there’s something here for everyone - especially if you’re battling thick, unruly hair like mine.
