When it comes to getting a smooth, irritation-free shave, a lot of focus is put on the shaving cream or aftershave you use. But there’s one crucial part of the equation that often gets overlooked - the razor blade itself. A well-maintained razor is key to achieving that clean, polished look. Yet, many of us neglect this aspect or simply replace razors without a second thought. Even high-quality blades will dull quickly if not properly cared for.
Taking a few simple steps to care for your razor can extend its life and keep it sharp for a longer, smoother shave. Here are some tips to help you out:
Rinse Your Blade with Hot Water
Before and after each shave, give your razor a good rinse under hot water. This not only helps clean off debris like hair and dead skin, but the heat also works as a disinfectant. Keeping the blade clean is essential for a smooth shave and reduces the chance of infection.
For an even deeper clean, use alcohol. Dab some onto a cotton ball and wipe the blade from top to bottom to help kill any bacteria left behind.
Keep Your Razor Dry
While it’s convenient to leave your razor in the bathroom, the humidity can cause the blades to rust and dull faster. Instead, try to store it in the driest spot you can find, or invest in a stand to keep it elevated and away from damp surfaces.
Change Your Blade After 5-8 Uses or Every Few Weeks
Whether you're using a safety razor or a cartridge razor, the blade should be replaced after five to eight shaves, or every two to three weeks, whichever comes first. Stretching a blade beyond this point can lead to irritation and cuts.

Never Share Your Razor
We might be tempted to lend our razor to a close friend or sibling, but that’s a bad idea for a number of reasons. Not only does sharing razors cause the blade to wear out faster, but it also puts both parties at risk of spreading bacteria, viruses, or even infections like hepatitis B, C, or HIV. Keep your razor to yourself - it's for your skin only!
