The Power of Subtlety in Modern Fashion

Updated: Dec 19

This quote perfectly captures the meticulous nature of Tom Ford, the influential designer behind Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and his own eponymous brand. Few designers have left such an enduring mark on fashion over the decades like Ford.

Known for his impeccable style, Ford shares insights on everything from his daily "uniform" to the essential rules of accessorizing. Here are some key dressing tips from Tom Ford that every man should consider:

"I know what works for me. So, day after day, I choose the same things."

It might seem surprising for someone in the fashion industry to embrace such a routine approach, but that’s Tom Ford for you. In a 2019 interview with Vogue, he stated, "I know what works for me. It’s black, brown, gray. White only works for tennis." Ford favors a consistent look, opting for sharply tailored suits that command attention and admiration.

This concept of a "uniform" isn't new; influential figures like Barack Obama and Steve Jobs have embraced similar styles. For Ford, well-fitted suits are the cornerstone of his wardrobe.

"You need to find what makes you truly comfortable, both physically and mentally."

Continuing the theme of the "uniform," Ford emphasizes the importance of clothing that flatters your body and aligns with your personal style. For him, this means steering clear of knitwear (which he finds lacking) and favoring sturdy boots over sneakers. He treats his suits like armor, reflecting a strong personal aesthetic.

While directing Nocturnal Animals, Ford donned a suit daily - except during outdoor shoots in Texas, where he opted for cowboy boots and a hat to fit the setting. He believes that your outfits should serve you, not the other way around. Whether it’s a suit or a casual sweater and jeans, wear what makes you feel confident.

"I dash around at parties just to button people's jackets."

With his expertise in crafting and wearing impeccable suits, Ford has no qualms about offering fashion advice. In a 2019 New York Times article, he remarked on Donald Trump’s style, noting, "He’s tall but lacks the necessary neatness. I find it strange that Trump never buttons his suit jacket. I’ve dashed around at parties just to button people's jackets. Buttoning your jacket gives you a softer waist and hip line."

"A design isn't just called beautiful simply because it's beautiful."

Ford believes that true beauty in design involves various factors, including sophistication, aesthetics, and functionality. He advises researching and identifying the experts in each field. Just because a brand excels at making suits doesn’t mean they’ll do the same with jeans. Invest time in understanding quality and choose wisely.

"Whatever you do, you must have a full-length mirror."

While it may seem obvious, many men neglect to check their full appearance before heading out. "You need to view yourself from head to toe, even if it's just to see if your watch matches your shoes," Ford told GQ.

Regarding watches, Ford has strict guidelines: never wear two at once, avoid placing a watch over a shirt cuff, match the watch face color with cufflinks, and coordinate strap color with shoes. And never, under any circumstances, wear a diving watch with a tuxedo!
