Mastering the Timeless Question: "What to Wear Today?" with Casual Style

Casual style may seem like the "easiest" choice in menswear, especially when compared to the structured, rule-driven world of Formal style with suits and ties. But in reality, Casual can be a minefield just as much as any other style.

What is Casual Wear?

Casual wear - also known as streetwear or weekend attire - is all about comfort and freedom. Unlike the rigid rules of formal dressing, casual style gives you more flexibility, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t certain dos and don’ts. For a gentleman who's used to spending weekdays in a suit, stepping into Casual territory can feel a bit confusing. But don't worry, I'm here to help you get it right!

Don't Overlook the Small Details!

While suits scream elegance and sophistication, it’s the small details that really elevate your look. Think about a perfectly paired shirt and tie or a pocket square that pops. Casual style isn’t any different. A little attention to detail can go a long way. For example, if you're rolling up your jeans, make sure your socks match the vibe of your outfit - don’t just grab any old pair. Or maybe try tucking in your t-shirt for a more polished look - or skip the belt for a cleaner, more streamlined appearance.

These subtle touches may seem small, but they can totally transform your outfit. As seen in the images above, tucking in a t-shirt with or without a belt can give you completely different looks.

Fit is Key!

No matter how much you spent or how trendy the brand, if it doesn’t fit right, it’s not worth wearing. In Casual style, fit isn’t just about size - it’s also about form, comfort, and how an item aligns with your personal style. Get the fit right, and everything else will fall into place..

Quality > Quantity

Don't waste your money filling your wardrobe with cheap, disposable items. The adage “you get what you pay for” rings true in menswear. Fast fashion may offer attractive prices, but it’s usually short-lived. Trust me, I’ve been down that road too many times...

My current shopping philosophy? Spend a little more on fewer items. Instead of stocking up on $5 t-shirts from H&M, invest in a few from brands like Sunspel, Asket, or ISTO. The difference in quality is immediately noticeable the first time you wear them, and they’ll hold up better after multiple washes.

Focus on the Essentials

In the world of Casual style, the “Less is more” mantra holds strong. Classic, timeless pieces like slim-fit jeans, oxford shirts, white/navy t-shirts, white sneakers, and denim jackets are all wardrobe staples that never go out of style.

Find Your Look and Stick With It

You might think wearing the same types of outfits daily would be boring, but consistency is key to mastering style. Even designer Tom Ford is a fan of this approach. When you know what works for you, dressing becomes effortless and confidence-boosting.

Sticking to a go-to look means you’ll never struggle to put something together in the morning. And as we know, confidence is always the best accessory.

Add Some Standout Pieces

While basics form the backbone of your wardrobe, a few standout items - whether they’re bold colors, unique patterns, or interesting materials - can add character and flair to your outfits. The trick is to limit yourself to just one statement piece per outfit to avoid clashing colors or patterns.

Casual Doesn’t Mean Careless

Finally, don’t fall into the trap of thinking Casual equals lazy or sloppy. Casual can be just as sharp and stylish as any formal look if executed properly. The key is choosing pieces that are comfortable, stylish, and well-fitted.

Casual style isn’t just easy and comfortable; when done right, it’s incredibly appealing and sharp. Nail the right pieces, and you won’t be wondering what to wear anymore.
