Jeans have been a wardrobe staple for over a century, regardless of who you are. Their timeless appeal is unmatched, but when it comes to fit, style, and even color, navigating the world of jeans can get tricky fast.

In recent years, especially in 2021, jeans have leaned heavily towards roomier, more comfortable fits. And with that, a slew of new terms have emerged. Think you know the difference between Relaxed Taper and Slim Straight? Let’s break down the jean fits of 2021 so you can stay in the know.

Straight Leg

Let’s start with the basics. Straight-leg jeans are an old-school concept but have made a major comeback as the top fit of the year. This cut runs straight from the hips all the way down to the hem. The best example? Levi’s iconic 501s. Straight Leg jeans are a balanced fit - neither too tight nor too loose - giving you all the comfort without sacrificing style.

Straight Taper

For those who like a little more definition, Straight Taper jeans are straight through the hips and thighs but begin to narrow from the knee down. This fit is ideal if you want room in the thighs but prefer a sleeker, more tapered silhouette below the knee, making it easy to pair with a wide range of shoes.

Slim Straight

If you like a closer fit, Slim Straight jeans give you a straight-leg design but with a narrower cut. They’re more fitted compared to the traditional Straight Leg, offering a modern look without sacrificing comfort or freedom of movement.

Slim Taper

We’re edging towards skinny jean territory with Slim Taper. These jeans start slim at the thighs and get even more tapered from the knees down. For guys with larger thighs, be careful - this fit might end up hugging more than you’d like, turning into an accidental skinny fit 😂.

Bootcut

Lightly flared pants (left) and more dramatically flared pants (right).

A nod to the cowboy era of the 1970s, bootcut jeans are making a big return. Characterized by a slight flare at the hem (or a more exaggerated one, depending on how bold you’re feeling), they offer a unique mix of nostalgia and style. Bootcut jeans are fitted through the hips and thighs, with that signature extra room at the bottom - perfect for pairing with boots, naturally.

Ready to up your denim game in 2021? Now you’ve got the lingo down, so no more guessing at the store!
