The Golden Era of Romance: 2000s Films to Rediscover During the Pandemic

If you’re stuck at home, why not dive into the most romantic films of the 2000s? For me, nothing in recent years - save for Her (2013) - has captured the timeless magic of pure romance. Hollywood’s romance renaissance may be behind us, overtaken by superheroes and horror flicks, but the 2000s were undeniably the Decade of Romance.

Even today, gems like Closer, High Fidelity, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind hold their charm with relatable stories and masterful storytelling. Unlike today’s trend of prioritizing high-concept ideas, these films focused on emotional depth and narrative simplicity, giving them an enduring vitality. So, as you cozy up at home, rediscover these classics:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) What if you could erase someone from your memories? Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet star as a couple who do just that - but find that history has a way of lingering.

This poignant exploration of love and loss will leave you reflecting on the beauty of imperfection.

Lost in Translation (2003) An aging actor (Bill Murray) meets a directionless young woman (Scarlett Johansson) in the bustling heart of Tokyo.

Their fleeting connection in a foreign city becomes an unforgettable love story, making it a must-watch for fans of Japan and emotional storytelling.

Punch-Drunk Love (2002) Adam Sandler surprises in his most romantic role as a troubled man who finds love in unexpected places.

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, this film is an intoxicating blend of vulnerability and passion.

(500) Days of Summer (2009) “This is not a love story - it’s a story about love.” This modern classic captures the highs and heartbreaks of a relationship with refreshing honesty, reminding us why we chase love despite its challenges.

High Fidelity (2000) A record store owner reflects on his Top 5 heartbreaks while navigating a midlife crisis. John Cusack delivers a stellar performance in this witty, music-infused tale of self-discovery and romantic failure.

Sideways (2004) Two men - one a wine enthusiast, the other a party animal - embark on a weeklong trip through California wine country. With its bittersweet humor and romantic undertones, this film pairs perfectly with a glass of your favorite vintage.

Before Sunset (2004) A long-awaited reunion in Paris leads to an afternoon of wandering and wistful conversation. Before Sunset is a poetic meditation on love, timing, and the roads not taken.

Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008) When Nick and Norah cross paths, their shared love for music sparks an unforgettable night in New York City. This youthful, music-filled romance is as quirky as it is heartwarming.

Once (2007) A street musician and a flower seller form a deep connection through their shared love of music. With no frills or steamy moments, Once proves that romance can flourish in life’s simplest moments.

Away from Her (2006) Can love endure even when memories fade? This tender story of an elderly couple grapples with Alzheimer’s, showing that love’s complexities only deepen with time.

Closer (2004) “Where is the love? I can’t feel it. I can’t touch it.” This raw exploration of infidelity, desire, and emotional entanglement is brought to life by a powerhouse cast: Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Julia Roberts, and Clive Owen.
