The Many Types of Washes for Your Jeans

Once humble workwear, jeans have evolved into a wardrobe staple, blending rugged durability with refined style. The beauty of denim lies in its versatility, and how you treat or wash your jeans can completely transform their look and feel. Each wash imparts its own character, allowing you to express your style uniquely. Which wash will you choose?

Raw denim

Raw denim is as pure as it gets - untreated and unwashed after dyeing. Enthusiasts love raw denim for the challenge it presents; these jeans start stiff and require a "break-in" period before they mold to your body.

The stages of "breaking in" raw jeans (from top to bottom).

You won’t find a soft, broken-in feel from day one, but the reward is a unique, personalized fade that’s impossible to duplicate, even if you own two identical pairs. Indigo blue is the classic color for raw denim, though black versions are also available, albeit less common.

Stone wash

Stone wash jeans gained popularity in the 1980s rock scene and have since become a go-to for many. These jeans are the opposite of raw denim, offering a lighter, more worn-in look straight off the rack.

Achieved by washing denim with pumice stones, this process strips away some of the indigo dye, creating a softer, lived-in appearance. The downside? Stone washing consumes a significant amount of water, making it less eco-friendly.

Acid wash

If you're into bold, edgy styles, acid wash jeans may be your go-to. This look, tied to the rebellious punk era of the 1970s, is achieved through an alkaline chemical process that strips away much of the color, creating high-contrast patterns.

Modern methods use lasers to replicate the acid wash effect, which is more environmentally conscious. Acid wash jeans are ideal for streetwear, but they’re not the easiest to pair with more refined outfits.

Rinse wash/Dark wash

Rinse wash is a minimal treatment that preserves the deep, rich color of raw denim. The jeans undergo a quick wash to remove excess dye and slightly soften the fabric, resulting in a classic, dark finish that remains close to the original indigo hue.

Dark wash jeans are incredibly versatile - whether you're dressing up for work or keeping it casual on the weekend, a dark pair can adapt to any scenario.

Distressed/Ripped Jeans

Distressed or ripped jeans give off a worn-out, rugged vibe, with strategically placed rips and tears to create an effortlessly cool look. Ironically, you'll pay extra for these pre-worn effects.

While they exude a laid-back style, distressed jeans can be tricky to pull off in certain settings. Before reaching for your ripped jeans, consider where you’re going and who you’re meeting - these jeans are strictly for casual, rough-edged looks.
